Drawing at scale

At Bath Spa University during my MAFA

I discovered that there was something intrinsically powerful about drawing at scale, it made me feel like I was shouting, I wasn't keeping myself small. During a symposium I was given access to materials and space in order to investigate the process.

Me, You , Us
Charcoal, graphite and mixed inks on paper.

Showing drawings as sculptures

I let rip and created numerous freeform drawings displaying them in totems slightly larger than the human form. Again using scale to interrogate drawing in a primal, raw state.

Mind Landscapes

Graphite drawing  2.5 x 1.5 m

I'd always painted about rich physical experiences and I was finding ways to directly portray my inner state in a kind of landscape, on paper the size of me.

Revelation and Concealment

Asemic Writing

I realised that there is a huge push / pull for an artist, who can often seek at one to show everything and conceal their identity. Asemic writing allows me to show my intimate thoughts to the world without revealing anything.

Lexicon

Recent exhibition at Clayhill Arts, Somerset. I was previously artist in residence here and was given a chance to return and make exploratory work for their closing exhibition. I did a test run of an idea I've had to produce writing and drawing and hang it so people can physically walk among it. I want to produce this at a larger, more ambitious scale so it becomes submersive. The writing is mostly unreadable so it becomes a landscape, a kind of intangible story. Something being whispered at the same time as being shouted. I'd like to find out what happens if I push this further.
